California officially leads the nation in recycling, according to a report published by the California Integrated Waste Management Board announcing the state has reached a 58% waste diversion rate. Of the 93 million tons of solid waste produced by Californians, nearly 54 million tons have found renewed use in places other than landfills. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve written about Oakland, California-based architect Michelle Kaufmann before, but I just have to mention her here again, as she’s proven to be one of my muses for my Zero Dollar Christmas challenge.
That’s because Kaufmann’s not only an eco-minded building designer, but a savvy recycler and crafter as well. And in researching ideas for creating hand-made Christmas gifts with materials found around the house, I keep coming across links to some of her wonderful projects.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, along with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, and San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed joined Better Place CEO Shai Agassi in announcing a plan for a sustainable transportation model for California.
Shai Agassi founded Better Place in October of 2007 with $200 million in venture capital. The vision of Better Place is to reduce global dependency on oil by creating a market-based transportation infrastructure that supports electric vehicles and renewable energy.
Within the first six months of its founding, Better Place forged cooperative agreements with business and government in Israel and Denmark, most recently announcing a deal to bring Better Place to Australia. And with today’s announcement the electric car infrastructure model is set to come to California, starting in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Developed by the Environmental Defense Fund in partnership with the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, the electronic guidebook can be downloaded here starting Sept. 25.
And if you’re looking to publicly advocate for the creation of more green jobs, why not join the Ella Baker Center’s Saturday, Sept. 27, Green Jobs Now! rally and concert? The event, part of the center’s Green-Collar Jobs Campaign, is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. at Mosswood Park in Oakland.
