Record Number of Endangered Panthers Killed by Vehicles

According to Defenders of Wildlife, 2009 was a very bad year for the Florida panther, Puma concolor coryi. Nearly 20 percent of the Florida panther population was killed by vehicles last year. Unidentified Mosquito Species Killing Livestock

A sting from an unidentified mosquito has proven to be quite deadly for livestock in Pekanbaru, Indonesia.   According to Askardiya Ribudana Patrianov, head of Riau Province’s Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, “tens of livestock” have died since the attacks began in December, 2009.   Read the rest of this entry »

Newly Discovered Crab Resembles Strawberries

Marine biologist Ho Ping-ho spotted two colorful crabs off the coast of Taiwan last June. Along with a team of researchers, Ho, Assistant Professor at National Taiwan Ocean University, found the female crabs off the coast near Kenting National Park.  The team, invited by Kenting National Park, was researching the environmental impact of an oil leak from a ship that ran aground when the discovery was made. More than 70,000 square miles of habitat has been proposed for critically endangered leatherback turtles in U.S. waters off California, Oregon, and Washington.

Endangered species protection finally advances in favor of leatherback turtles: The National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a proposal today for 70,000 square miles of critical habitat in the waters off the U.S. Pacific Coast.

Controversial Wolf Hunt Underway in Sweden: Wolves Killed

For the first time in decades, a controversial wolf hunt is underway in Sweden.  The Swedish Environment Protection Agency approved the limited cull of 27 wolves, or about 10 percent of the Swedish wolf population.  In October, the Swedish parliament voted to limit the wolf population to 210 animals for the next five years. 12 Rhino Poachers Arrested in Kenya After Rhino Slaughtered on Private Ranch

12 suspected rhino poachers and rhino horn buyers have been arrested in Kenya following the killing of a female Southern white rhino on a private ranch.

A manhunt in central Kenya has resulted in the arrest of 12 suspected rhino poachers and rhino horn buyers, after a 10-year old female Southern white rhino was shot at the Mugie rhino sanctuary on December 28, and her horns brutally hacked off.

The rhino’s horns were recovered in the arrest, along with $8,500 USD in cash.

Killing Sharks for Human Survival: Species Threatened by Production of H1N1 Vaccine

The effects of the swine flu upon sharks is not a direct one – these mammals are not finding themselves coming down with cases of H1N1 like humans and other land animals. However, they are being threatened in a grave way by the virus through the pharmaceutical process which requires a substance that can be obtained from the sharks’ liver.
