What If You Didn’t Have Clean Drinking Water?

You might just think of it as Sunday, but this particular Sunday, March 22nd, has a larger importance – it’s World Water Day, an international day of observance and action, drawing attention to the fact that over 1 billion people that share this planet do not have access to clean drinking water.

Born from the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, World Water Day has a different theme every year. This year’s focus is on transboundary waters: sharing water, sharing opportunities.

Though the event is designed primarily to raise awareness, there are things that you can do to be actively involved. Consider joining a Water Walk with WaterAid, attending a UN-sponsored event, or visiting a local restaurant participating in the Tap Project and donate $1 for tap water that you would normally receive for free. There are more than 40 restaurants participating in the LA area alone. The money raised goes toward UNICEF’s water, sanitation and hygiene programs.

We are so fortunate to have safe, clean drinking water delivered to our homes for (nearly) free. Makes bottled water seem even crazier, huh?
