Green News Across the U.S.: Jan. 30 - Feb. 6, 2009

A lot more good green news comes out every day than any one person — or even one Website — can keep up with. While we can’t cover it all, following are a few of the previous week’s news stories worth mentioning:

• Making its debut at the TED (”Technology, Entertainment, Design”) conference in California this week: the Mission One all-electric, super-sporty and zero-emissions motorcycle that can go up to 150 miles per hour;

• The city of San Francisco says it’ll be the first community in the U.S. to build a “brown grease”-to-biofuel facility. The pilot project will not only generate biofuels but keep sewer-clogging waste out of city pipes, potentially saving millions in cleanup and repair costs;
• Two students at the University of California-Irvine — Kyle Good and Bryan Le — this week won the $25,000 “What’s Your Crazy Green Idea?” competition sponsored by the X PRIZE Foundation. Their really-not-so-crazy-but-rather-brilliant idea? An “ultra capacitor” that could provide a reliable and lasting new form of energy storage;
• Even if you’re not a big fan of Wal-Mart, you have to applaud the Wal-Mart Foundation’s decision to grant $5 million to the U.S. Conference of Mayors to promote the development of green jobs in cities across the country. The foundation also awarded $750,000 to Veterans Green Jobs to help develop green job training skills.
