Sister Simone Campbell at the DNC: We are All Responsible for One Another

Sister Simone Campbell

Sister Simone Campbell, the Executive Director of the social justice lobby NETWORK, was one of many inspiring women who addressed the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina this week. The exuberant Catholic nun told the packed auditorium how dangerous the proposed Romney/Ryan budget would be for millions of poor and disenfranchised families across our nation who are barely getting by. Sister Simone gave a dynamic speech which reinforced the strong christian belief that everyone has a shared responsibility to all of our fellow humans:

“…Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are correct when they say that each individual should be responsible. But their budget goes astray in not acknowledging that we are responsible not only for ourselves and our immediate family — rather — our faith strongly affirms that we are all responsible for one another. I am my sister’s keeper. I am my brother’s keeper.”

Truth & Faith vs. Power & Money

Sister Simone is one of the infamous “nuns on the bus“, a group of religious activists who travelled the country, meeting struggling families and listening to their individual stories. A few months ago our blog highlighted Sister Simone’s engaging guest appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show, just as the nuns were beginning their bus trip. This is how the social justice activist group described their motivations and what they hoped to accomplish during their tour:

“Catholic Sisters across the country work every day with people struggling at the economic margins. Meanwhile, the House of Representative has approved the ‘Ryan Budget’ – which will harm millions of the people they serve.

NETWORK  just completed a bus tour through nine states to highlight the work of Catholic Sisters, meet the people they serve, and learn about the harm that would be caused by these federal budget cuts. ‘Nuns on the Bus: Nuns Drive for Faith, Family and Fairness’ stopped in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia during the two-week tour from June 18 through July 2. We visited social service agencies and offices of members of Congress, speaking out in opposition to the Ryan budget that passed the House.”
