Canada’s Liberal Party has just come out strongly in support of legalizing marijuana nationally. Previously the country’s Liberals had only ever pushed for the decriminalization of cannabis; but now their perspective has shifted, and the legalization of weed has been added to the political party’s agenda.
This new sensible effort to legalize all cannabis in Canada, as well as implementing regulations and taxes for its production and sale, just like alcohol, presents a very stark contrast to the regressive policies of the nation’s governing Conservative Party. The right wing party presently in power has continually presented nothing but the same tired and ineffective “tough on crime” increased penalties for weed possession.
The Winnipeg Free Press has just reported about the proposed legal drug reforms:
Federal Liberals are taking some risky departures from the cautious political norm in a bid to put their once-mighty party back on the electoral map. Sunday, they overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling for the legalization and regulation of marijuana — a position immediately endorsed in principle by interim leader Bob Rae, although it remains to be seen how, or if, the resolution translates into a platform plank for the next election.
“Let’s face up to it, Canada: The war on drugs has been a complete bust,” Rae declared in a closing speech to a three-day Liberal renewal convention.
Down south in Washington state the locals will be voting to legalize all marijuana for adult use later this year. It seems that the Canadians are also beginning to realize that the “War on Drugs” has failed miserably, both monetarily, as well as in terms of the devastating human costs. Finally making pot legal is not only more economically viable and sustainable, it also just makes sense.
