Trickle Down Economics is a Vicious Fraud

The highly esteemed economist, Robert Reich, clearly explains what some of our country’s largest financial system problems are, offers a clear plan with well defined policy solutions, and presents this concise message to President Obama:

“We’ll give you a mandate in your second term to raise taxes on the rich, including capital gains taxes, and put a tax on financial transactions, also, resurrect the Glass-Steagall Act, limit the size of big banks, and force them to modify the loans of millions of Americans who are now underwater; and invest in public schools and other infrastructure so that all Americans can prosper in this new economy.”

cooperatives

We are mired in a bleak global depression that has already devastated millions of families; and answers for a way out of this horrendous mess sometimes seem few and far between. However, one of the bright rays of light shining through this economic disaster is the rise of the cooperative movement across the planet. Creating more worker-owned collectives and cooperative enterprises can help diverse nations to shape a much more viable, innovative, just and sustainable future for us all.

Water Links Two of the Best Films of 2011

Meek's Cut Off

As clean water becomes increasingly scarce globally, it is probably not an accident that access to water is one of the prominent themes in two of the most gripping films that have been released this year. The first movie, “Even the Rain” is an excellent Spanish movie which I wrote about a few months ago, that is set in Bolivia. The need for water is also one of the main characters interwoven into the engaging dramatic plot of my other favorite movie of 2011, “Meek’s Cut Off”.

Other than renewable energy solutions, natural gas has stood out as one of the cleaner energy sources for those wishing to leave a greener footprint. Unfortunately, the horizontal drilling techniques used to obtain this gas, accompanied by toxic hydraulic fracturing chemicals, are now causing great alarm concerning the long-term consequences on our water and environment.

Is Hanford Nuclear Waste Dump Our Next Fukushima Disaster?

Hanford Nuclear site

Did you know that Washington state’s Hanford Nuclear site contains 2/3 of all the radioactive nuclear waste in the United States? In addition to having the dubious distinction of being the first full-scale plutonium production reactor in the world, it is also North America’s most severely contaminated nuclear site. Each year over a third of our federal government’s entire budget for nuclear cleanup — roughly $2 billion every single year — is directed toward trying to remediate the huge volatile radioactive mess at Hanford.
