A light powdery frost had blanketed the forest on the night before Kwanzaa in Cascadia Meadow; all of the creatures were busy doing for others, sharing kindness and good will. Many members of the extended collective had travelled great distances to join together for the General Assembly community meeting that was to be held that very evening.
In light of our bleak economic climate, it is most fortunate that Kwanzaa is not about buying presents, consuming products, or spending money. The foundation of Kwanzaa is coming together to promote building and strengthening one’s own character, doing for others, and working to improve the health of our larger community. The holiday is not about going into debt to purchase lots of crap that nobody needs; the meaningful focus of the tradition is intrinsically internal, local and sustainable.
Marijuana activists in the Pacific Northwest are sponsoring a new ballot initiative which would legalize marijuana in Washington state for all adults 21 years of age and older. The group fighting for cannabis legalization, New Approach Washington, has stated that they have collected over 100,000 more signatures than the 241,153 that are required for Initiative 502 to be on next year’s ballot in November 2012.
