Earache Home Remedies

Now that the winter months are upon us, it’s not uncommon to find yourself suffering from a dreaded earache. While there are many causes of earaches — from an ear infection, sore throat, issues with your sinuses or a build-up of earwax — there are also many home remedy treatments you can find in the kitchen that may be used to soothe an aching ear.

Garlic Juice

At first you may be skeptical about this one — who’s ever heard of putting garlic juice in your ear, after all? Rest assured, it really does work. The analgesic properties of the garlic juice will help relieve pain caused by swelling or irritation inside the affected ear.

 

Chew Gum

If your earache is caused by a rise in altitude — such as while taking a trip up in the mountains or flying on an airplane — a common home cure is the simple act of chewing gum. Just make sure it’s aspartame-free. The chewing motion causes your jaw muscles to contract and the Eustachian tubes to open. Yawning is another method used to help pop your ears and relieve unpleasant pressure when at high altitudes.

 

Olive Oil

Olive oil is one of the most widely used home methods for treating an earache naturally. Not only does olive oil provide pain relief for an earache, it also treats buzzing in the ears. To use olive oil to treat buzzing or an earache, heat the oil briefly so that it is slightly warm before inserting into the ear canal. Once you have poured the oil into your ear, lay down on your side (oil side up so the oil won’t spill out) for about ten minutes.

 

Peroxide

Another commonly used treatment for earaches is good ol’ hydrogen peroxide. This remedy helps with clogged ears, especially when due to the build-up of earwax. The peroxide loosens the wax in the ear canal, so it can easily be drained out or swiped out with a washcloth.

 

Ginger

Fresh juice extracted from ginger root can also be placed in the ear canal to help alleviate pain from an earache. The strong anti-inflammatory properties of ginger are extremely effective in curing an ear infection, as well as providing overall pain relief.

Next time you feel your ear acting up, whether it be due to allergies, the common cold, an infection, or build-up of earwax, try one of these suggested home remedies for quick, natural, and efficient relief. Of course, if your earache persists for more than a few days, you should seek help from your doctor.
