Winter is swiftly approaching, and with the cold weather comes cold and flu season. Fighting off a cold or flu virus can be quite a hassle once you have been infected with it, and can take forever to fully recover from. In this article, we will look at ways to naturally boost your immune system, as a means of warding off the cold or flu (or both) this Winter.

Equip Yourself With Vitamin C

While loading up on Vitamin C won’t really help once you’ve already come down with a cold, research has shown that people who consume Vitamin C supplements on a regular basis are more likely to have shorter colds with somewhat milder symptoms.

Since the human body cannot produce or store Vitamin C on it’s own, it’s vital that your diet include a sufficient amount of foods rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin-C-rich foods include fruits, such as oranges (and other citrus fruits,) cantaloupe, kiwis, mangos, papaya, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cranberries, tomatoes, and watermelon; as well as many vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, green and red peppers, spinach, turnip greens, cabbage, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, and winter squash.

Take Echinacea

Echinacea is an herb long known for it’s medicinal qualities. Echinacea is commonly used to treat the cold, flu, and other viral infections.

It is believed that Echinacea helps boost the immune system, therefore warding off any infections or reducing any cold or flu symptoms. Echinacea can be used in a variety of ways. The parts of the plant which grow above ground, as well as the roots, can be used fresh or dried to make teas, squeezed for juice, or in extracts. Many people take Echinacea supplements in pill-form.

Drink Ginger Tea

Tea made from fresh ginger root has been used to treat the common cold and flu for quite a long time now. Ginger is well documented for boosting the immune system. Ginger is a strong antioxidant, containing two natural antibiotics as well as anti-inflammatory agents. Ginger root is known to help relieve congestion. The tea made from fresh ginger root has the ability to sooth a sore throat. Ginger has been known to kill cold viruses, as well as fight chills and fever.

Ginger root has been used for it’s medicinal purposes for centuries, and is still found to be useful in fighting off cold and flu viruses to this day.

These are just a few methods in which you can naturally prepare yourself for cold and flu season this year. When Winter comes, you don’t want to be left out in the cold… do you? Remember these tips, and you’ll give your immune system a boost, which will help lock those cold germs out.

    Garlic is also most useful in keeping one’s immune system strong; it is a natural antibiotic. In addition to eating lots of garlic, whenever I feel a sore throat looming, I just suck on a peeled clove of garlic for a few hours. It accomplishes medicinal wonders.
