Saturday’s ‘Occupy Seattle’ rally (“general Assembly”) at Westlake Plaza and march on City Hall went off without too many hitches and just three twoarrests at its near conclusion. I estimate the crowd, at its peak, to have been between 3 and 4000.
News & commentary on sustainability, activism, urban planning, politics, and our world.
I recently read a headline saying that Scotland had made the “World’s First Urban Green Space Map.” Now, while that sounds pretty cool, I’m not sure if I caught what’s first about it. As you may or may not know, my master’s degree was in city planning — making urban green space maps is nothing new in the field. Even making online, interactive versions of the maps like this one is not at all unheard of. My only thought is that it might be the first national-scale map of its kind….
The tragic death of Steve Jobs has cast a somber cold grey cloud over the world today. This week we have been staying in Mountain View, just a few miles from Apple headquarters in Cupertino, and very near to where Mr. Jobs was raised. Everything here seems so still, quiet and sad around the neighborhood. Billowing charcoal clouds have torn open the sky and have been intermittently pouring down drenching rain showers since yesterday, and last night the damp air turned a bit frigid, at least by California standards. I know that this cold wet snap just portends a change in the seasons, but today it really feels like everything is consumed with grief over the untimely loss of this design genius.
Mordor, complete utter evil, and throwing the one ring into the Cracks of Doom immediately came to mind when I saw this image illustrating the rapid consolidation of all our nation’s banks. So much power, influence and money in the hands of so very few has created an inhumane Sauron like behemoth banking system whose only cruel desire is for more and more. We the people are being systematically crushed, devoured and regurgitated within the relentless grinding cogs of this corrupt unsustainable machine.
