Lessons from a Phoenix Community Garden Project

In the heart of Phoenix, Arizona a people’s movement known as the Allied Group of Free Thinkers (A.L.O.F.T.) has a simple goal in mind: grow an organic garden. While some are waiting for an outcome from #occupywallstreet to figure out what to do, groups like A.L.O.F.T have been providing an excellent example. Follow A.L.O.F.T’s lead with five lessons they set for community change toward sustainability.

Garden simplicity

1. Simplicity

How often does a great idea become mottled by over planning and confusion from over thinking? It’s true that the best plans are those with a clear goal in mind, but that doesn’t mean they must become over complicated. A.L.O.F.T.’s goal is simply to create a community garden space in urban Phoenix which will become a part of community-hosted free food events while also providing ingredients for the Conspire Vegan Cafe, where the garden is located.
