Roots to Fruits: Welcome to Our Shared Fruiture

Roots to Fruits

Roots to Fruits is a collective of three women who want to put a fruit tree, or three, in every San Francisco yard. They already have the support of many local residents, organizations and businesses; one of their many strengths is their ability to make connections — recognizing challenges and finding the right people and solutions through local coalition building.

The group has managed to gather an impressive collection of local experts to offer practical education on not only fruit tree related subjects, but also on urban homesteading skills, as well as many tools for more sustainable living. Roots to Fruits offers cradle to cradle solution to anyone who is interested in living a more connected and self-sufficient life. In these times of increasing austerity, they are actually advocating for the flourishing of abundant food.

Scary Graphic of Everything that Rupert Murdoch Owns

chart of everything that Murdoch owns

I just came across this disturbing chart at Moveon.org which details everything that the alleged criminal billionaire Rupert Murdoch (aka Lord Voldemort) owns. It is quite daunting to see the scope of his crumbling empire of influence. I already knew about Fox and all of the sleazy tabloids that he owns, but I had no idea that Hulu was part of Murdoch’s corrupt oligarchy. Now just the idea of watching videos on that website makes me feel icky and dirty all over.

us most walkable cities 2011

I love writing on walkable cities. Have you noticed? I’m not the only one, though. There are huge communities and organizations of people working on that one particular issue. There’s also a great website, Walk Score, that ranks cities on their walkability (which I’m frustrated to find out is still not a word according to my Google Chrome spell checker).

More Useful Tips for Avoiding Jail Time While Vegetable Gardening Your Front Yard

Tricolor string beans

Last week I wrote in reference to the post on our sister blog, Eat Drink Better, about the Michigan woman who is being threatened with financial penalties and jail time for daring to grow vegetables in her own front yard. Editor Becky Striepe recently posted an update, and apparently urban gardener Julie Bass is still not off the hook while the prosecutor reviews the ordinance.

Therefore, I think more useful tips are called for to help those stubborn gardeners who insist on growing vegetables where impressionable small children risk being exposed to them, namely, in their front yards. But why is growing your own food a criminal enterprise?
