Reverend Billy’s Introduction to Earthalujah

Reverend Billy

We have an Earth crisis right now that we can’t label. In the old days it seems like there used to be people who would run down to the village common and shout “there’s an emergency here!” The traditional town crier. Someone should be shouting “Hey! The atmosphere! Too much heat! Extinction! Everything’s dying! Do something!” Where’s that person now?

The state of New York has now become the sixth in the United States to embrace marriage equality. After much impassioned debate, and the insertion of a handful of religious exemptions to appease the right, the New York state Congress passed marriage equity legislation late Friday evening by a 33 to 29 vote. The crowded congressional chamber spontaneously broke into ebullient cheers of “USA! USA!” after the successful vote. Marriages will be able to take place in the state thirty days after the bill is signed into law by Governor Cuomo.

New bipartisan legislation has just been introduced by Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, which would limit the role of the federal government in enforcing any prohibitions against marijuana. The proposed change in federal law would allow all citizens to legally grow, use or sell cannabis in the many states that currently allow it, without anymore fear of federal interference, penalties or prosecution. This is the first bill to propose repealing all of the federal laws related to criminalizing marijuana, not only possession and use of cannabis, but also the sale of it as well.
