Now I am no longer resigned to continue gagging on the onslaught of fucked up gender stereotypes and plastic princess consumer crap that Disney and our culture are trying to ram down our throats. There are other options. Yesterday’s writing workshop and Sister Spit show have infused me with hope that real change is already happening; it starts small, right where you are, as we all start honestly speaking our own truths out loud and telling our own stories.

Trek Promotes Bicycle Sharing Program

Now, if you live in Madison, you can join many of your fellow bike-crazy Wisconsinites and ride a bike instead of driving — and you don’t even have to own a bike. Wisconsin-based Trek Bicycles is donating $1 million for startup costs, plus another $1 million for each of three subsequent years, to bring it’s rental bikes program (B-Cycle) to Madison.

The Greening of the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show

The changing aesthetic in designs for suburban gardens was clearly reflected in the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show this past weekend. Now in its 26th year, the show emphasized green lifestyles as expressed through gardening with edible and native plants. Besides featuring edibles in many of the twenty design display gardens, the show included a separate 6000 square-foot edible garden designed by Oakland-based Star Apple Edible Gardens.

Yesterday the BBC reported that radiation levels at the crippled Fukushima reactor site are ten million times normal levels. As the oceans near the damaged nuclear plant are becoming contaminated with increasing amounts of nuclear radiation, concerns are growing about how much radioactive poison the planet’s seas can withstand.

However, although it is not receiving anywhere near as much attention as the unfolding disaster in Japan, the massive amounts of illegally dumped radioactive nuclear waste that are still being thrown into Somalia’s oceans potentially could prove to be an even more deadly catastrophe.
