Los Angeles County’s Worst Fire Ever Finds Redemption Through Art

Mary Clark-Carmago’s tile Phoenix made with materials found in the Deukmejian Wilderness Park, also benefits the park. 100% of proceeds from the sale of all 149 pieces in the group show goes to cleaning up and restoring the parks. The Art From The Ashes exhibit is running through July 24th at 216 S Brand Blvd in Glendale. Being quite an art collector and living on “Gallery Row” in downtown LA, I like to think I know good art from bad. And this is good art. Even better, it brings something of beauty into the world out of the worst fire Los Angeles County has ever experienced. The Station Fire devastated over 250 square miles of Los Angeles’ lungs, I mean, forest.

I was filled with a sense of hope at seeing something so beautiful come from such a devastating crisis. I also truly appreciated the quality of the art itself. Most of the artists were exceptional and I saw many pieces I would have loved to own, if they hadn’t already been sold. Such as this dress by Society For Rational Dress’s Corrine Grassini. She used a hinge to secure the neckband, adding an air of history to an otherwise simple white silk gown.

It was great to see  so many gorgeous pieces. They’re considering doing another series, as they still have more materials collected for artists to work with. Some artists did before/after type works, and there were a few references to the Phoenix, as these artworks are indeed rising from the ashes. The furniture, provided by Cisco Home was perfect for the exhibit, as much of it comes from reused materials. Go now while you still can! Most of the pieces have sold, as they’re priced to move.

This all went down during Eastside Greendrinks, with Pasadena and Silverlake teaming up to share this wonderful exhibit. The snacks were tasty as always, but even better, I finally got to try the legendary Kangen water. I don’t feel any different, perhaps they need to come to every Greendrinks so I can try some more…
