The ants arrived in my kitchen the other day, a thin line trailing by the compost to the water filter. I ignored them for a day or two, hoping that I could avoid dealing with it, so, of course, the line turned into a highway, and small groups of scouts headed out across the walls, over the breadboard, onto the stove. Untenable situation.
I like ants. I do not like wiping up hundreds of them. I recalled something I read recently about Bali, where food offerings are made to the spirits every morning at different spots around the family compound, and the ants eat the offerings and don’t enter the structures.

Safari ants invaded my house just before heavy rains…they were moving uphill…some came in under frontdoor…passed through kitchen and out through backdoor. Months later I found a small colony housed in a cardboard box on a high shelf.I watched and discovered they came out at night and worked the kitchen singly.I also noticed that there were absolutely NO cockroaches around ..though we had had a problem with these and found them difficult to exterminate absolutely.I remembered reading years ago about a certain species of ant which eat up cockroahes and their eggs…so decided to keep my little box of ants since they were no problem during the day and were doing a friendly job at night.
Ants rehoused themselves into a dried coconut shell,,,then again into a kitchen foil carton where they are at present…and everyone is under instruction not to disturb my special pets. They are brownish and about a centimetre in lenght..no pincers!Haven’t seen a cockroach in 7 years:)
