Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill May Be Worst in U.S. History

The massive oil spill in the gulf may end up being the worst in our nation’s history, by far. The deadly petrochemical spill is currently gushing 210,000 gallons of crude daily into our fragile oceans; if the wellhead is lost, then 6 million gallons a day could be spilled. By comparison, the horrific Exxon Valdez spill was a total of 11 million gallons. Yet, inexplicably, President Obama still supports increasing offshore oil drilling.

WTF?

Today the White House press secretary was asked, in light of this devastating  environmental disaster, if the president was having any second thoughts about expanding offshore drilling. Mr. Gibbs replied:

“No…we need the increased production. The president still continues to believe the great majority of that can be done safely, securely and without any harm to the environment.”

I suspect the President’s tune will change – 210,000 gallons of crude a day; 1,500,000 gallons a week; 6,000,000 a month… this quantity of oil is going to make Obama’s ‘belief’ mark him out as a fool; or a tool of the oil companies.

  2. Whether or not we need the increase in production, the spill has already had adverse effects on the environment of the gulf. Just take a look at the photos online of the dead turtles and fish already showing up on beaches in the gulf.

Not to mention, as a resident of Southeastern Lousiana, I know several people who make their livings fishing in the gulf. They will be in deep trouble in the years ahead if this doesn’t get fixed soon.
