Deeper wells are not necessarily going to provide the solution. Ground water levels are dropping - not helped by industrialised agricultural production - which is irrigating thirsty crops (which would be better grown elsewhere) with water from ancient aquifers in the middle of the day when the sun is at its hottest (leading to most of it evaporating). This kind of agriculture is also responsible to destroying watershed areas up-stream - so that when rain does fall, it leads to rapid run-off and flooding - rather than flowing to natural storage areas.

While Zimbabwe's 'leaders' battle over power-sharing arrangements, unresolved issues such as water and biodiversity loss (providing essential ecosystem services to smallholders) continues to undermine rural livelihoods which are already on the edge.

I wonder if they told the "men" - males - that fetching water might help make it rain, that would motivate them ? I doubt it.
I can't see it as my excuse to just carry-on living like petrol is mother's milk, though.

This is a tough one for me... I'm going to sound like I don't understand; like I don't care...
Masimba, whilst it's not bad enough for the men to bother carrying water I don't see why I should bother.
If the men had to carry their share of the water then within a month or so they'd be looking to bore another, deeper well, closer to their homes.
Whilst the men sit back and let the women do all the work I'm inclined to do likewise...
