No More Dog and Cat Meat in China?
In an effort to prevent animal abuse, China is taking steps to end a centuries-old tradition. Recently proposed legislation would outlaw the human consumption or sale of cat and dog meat, often called “fragrant meat,” which is still considered a delicacy in some parts of China.
Sadly, many of the animals that end up on dinner tables are believed to be pets, stolen from families then brutally slaughtered. According to a report by Chinese Animal Protection Network (CAPN), 10,000 cats are eaten each day during the winter months in the GuangDong province of China.
According to various reports, the proposed draft contains nine chapters that cover animal medical treatment, animal transportation and butcher regulations. If the bill is passed, individuals involved in the illegal sale or consumption of the meat could face a fine and/or jail-time up to 15 days. Establishments involved in the illegal practice could be fined up to $70,000. A hotline would also be set up for people to report any violations. The draft is expected to be sent to the National People’s Congress sometime in April.

There is patently nothing wrong with eating dogs or cats or any other animal other than pork chops.
It’s a big planet with a lot of cultures foods and animals that are food.

I must just disagree with John, with his statement “we need much greater food diversity” … because “it’s a big planet”. No, we don’t need it, we simply need to stop eating meat BECAUSE it is connected with so much suffering. World was not just made for humans to exploit it… it’s simple as that … and it would be very wrong to think that way (lets move on to the next level of thoughts and not live in the past).

Some of your comments were out of line. I imagine most people find the cruel slaughter of dogs and cats for fur or meat very disturbing. I would not consider eating pets a “stunt” nor is this story a “non-story.”

that deal in animal abuse; in fact I detest the
countries and their people.I am, and always have been,
a true lover of animals and the environment. I love
all what the Good Creator has given to this planet. I
respect Mother Nature and thank her when it rains
(cleanses some of the filth humans have placed on this
planet), and her winds (that give cleaner air), that
blow away filthy debris humans have made. I am a humble person, with no greed nor selfishness – I can
live very simply, just like the beautiful, wonderful
animals.

Why do we need greater food diversity? And at the cost of these poor animals lives? I don’t eat any meat and I also want to know why you think all animals can be eaten besides pork chops (by the way, those aren’t animals, you call them pigs, but I doubt you’d know that xD)

john, i have lived in china for 8 years, i don’t care they eat cats and dogs but it’s the way they are killed for eating i dislike. They are clubbed and stabbed to death slowly and painfully, this is to make them have more ‘fight’ in the meat, which will be better to ‘warm the blood.’ You’re an idiot John, there’s plenty of other kinds of food available. And Chinese really should get a little bit more adventurous when it comes to vegetarian food.

To darlingsapphire, just because China eats ‘dogs and cats’, it doesnt mean that China shouldnt be respected at all means. Think about it, Chinese has been eating dogs and cats and anything with 4 legs for ages, people from China grew up with eating those animals so for them, it’s fine to consume dogs or cats as well as cows and pigs. If you were raised to eat polar bear I am sure you see polar bear as any other meat too! I am defending for China not because I think dog&cat eating is fine, it’s because I don’t think anyone should ‘disrespect’ a country for that. Besides, the Chinese are finally doing something about it and hopefully the bill will pass.
I agree with John. All this lament about food shortage in the world, and some freaks decide that certain meats should be banned because they find it distasteful. These hypocrites shouldn’t try to appear civilised by showing affection for some animals when they can’t hide their uncivilised prejudice against other humans.

I applaud all of you for foregoing meat. It means there is more for me. Your faux concerns about suffering are little more than the bleatings of overprivileged, underdeveloped minds.
