Lily, a wild three-year-old black bear, began labor on Thursday. People around the world anxiously waited and watched for the arrival, which was shown live on the Internet. While most first-time litters include one or two cubs, after nearly 22 hours of labor, Lily gave birth to a single cub on January 22, 2010.
Lily’s den, equipped with a webcam, captured the entire event. Using live cam technology, the labor and birth was streamed live by the North American Bear Center (NABC) on its Lily Den Cam. Lily, part of a Wildlife Research Institute study on black bear ecology and behavior, resides near the Canada border in Ely, Minnesota.
The site, inundated with traffic, has experienced a few technical difficulties over the past few days. According to the site, the overwhelming growth in traffic, a 10,000 % increase, has resulted in the reconfiguration of parts of the site. Lily, now a bonafide Internet sensation, even has her own Twitter and Facebook accounts!
The sex of the cub is currently unknown. Both mama and baby are resting comfortably.
