I have to admit, I'm pretty excited about the streetcar project, though it's a real bummer that the city is having to choose one or the other.

What would really make a difference for Atlanta transit, imo, is some state funding. MARTA is the only transit system in a major U.S. city that doesn't receive any state funding, and it's shameful.

I just came across your post and, Becky, wanted to see what your thoughts are now that Mayor Reed has been in office a while. He is a big supporter of the Atlanta BeltLine (as he renamed it :-) ), so it was disappointing when he asked the BeltLine to retract their request for TIGER grant funding so as to not compete the streetcar project. In spite of my favoritism towards the BeltLine, the streetcar running from downtown to Old Fourth Ward and almost to Edgewood will hopefully have a positive impact on transit and walkability in Atlanta. With the eastside trail being constructed this year, you're in a prime spot in Edgewood!

I have to agree with you here. It sounds like Mary's statement just opened the door for her later excuse as to why it can't happen as much as she would like to see it...(smiles).

That doesn't mean that I believe confidently that either candidate will push thru on this agenda. It seems to mean more to the citizens than any of the politicians and developers. We should have waited until funds were RAISED and allocated for the rail line to ever change the zoning for all the hyper development. I can't help but think it was just a way to get the property developed and we will never see the rail....I want to be WRONG!
