A Real Stunner: CrustaStun Device Kills Lobster and Crab More Humanely

While many people enjoy eating a nice lobster or crab dinner, the methods often used to kill the crustaceans are sometimes seen as barbaric and cruel.   It can take live lobsters up to three minutes to die when plunged into a pot of boiling hot water.   It takes even longer for the crab – up to five minutes when boiled alive.

British entrepreneur Simon Buckhaven of Studham Technologies has invented a more humane way to kill crustaceans.  The new CrustaStun delivers a lethal electric shock which stuns and electrocutes the shellfish to death in seconds.

According to the website, the machine delivers an “instant current which anesthetizes the Crab, Lobster or other shellfish within a fraction of a second and kills within seconds.”  And according to Buckhaven, the more humane method also ensures a better tasting lobster and crab.

Lobster dinnerWhile some believe lobsters can not feel pain, others disagree.  Buckhaven believes the creatures do in fact feel pain, “These are sentient animals, who feel pain and distress, and you should not boil them alive or drown them in fresh water or cut them in half while they’re alive.”

Touted as the “world’s first humane electronic crustacean stunner,” the CrustaStun is available in two models, the Stunner for restaurants and the Continuous Flow Stunner for processors.  A home version is currently in development.   After a successful trial period, the device goes on sale this week.

  2. I agree with Mr. Buckhaven, and have allways thought it quite an impropper thing to do to anything living.
But there is worse. In South Korea I am told that they steam and boil mamals alive. What kind of “Karma” is that to a “non-believer”. There is a long way to go, I am sure, but had I not been up to my proverbials creating self-sustaining Wind energy systems, I might just have done something similar !
