According to reports, poachers are using another method to kill animals – electrocution. Officials are reporting poachers in Orissa’s Ganjam district of India are using livewires to kill deer, wild boars, bears and blackbucks.
Abhimanyu Behera, a suspected poacher, was electrocuted
last week in the jungle near the Bhatakahali village. While his family claims the man went to the forest to collect wood, law enforcement officials are reporting the man was actually electrocuted while laying a trap. Two days before the death, a suspected poacher from Buduli jungle was arrested. Several electrical wires were seized by police.
Wildlife activists suspect two peacocks were victims of electrocution several weeks ago at the Taratarini hill, although that has not been confirmed. Peacocks, Pavo cristatus Linnaeus, are the National Bird of India. Forest officials report other animals, including elephants, are also being killed by livewires.
Livewire Poaching:
Poachers reportedly tap into high tension wires using hooks to get electricity, then place the live
wire on or over animal tracks in the forest and jungles or in fields. When the wire is stepped on, by animal or human, electrocution occurs.
Some villagers dispute the charges, saying they resort to the practice to save their crops from other animals.
