Historic Baby Walrus Dies at New York Aquarium
The first Pacific walrus born at the New York Aquarium has passed away due to complications from pneumonia.
Sad news: Despite the best efforts of a dedicated veterinary team, Akituusaq, the first Pacific walrus born in the New York Aquarium’s 113-year history, has died at the age of two.
According to a Wildlife Conservation Society release, only five walruses born at aquariums have survived their first year. Akituusaq was born on June 12, 2007 and passed away on September 1, 2009.
Jon Forrest Dohlin, New York Aquarium Director, said the death of young Akituusaq was a loss to the Brooklyn community.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved walrus Akituusaq and are proud of the exemplary care that our entire staff provided during this critical time … We know Brooklyn was proud of Akituusaq and many loved him. This is a loss to the whole community.
The name Akituusaq means “gift given in return” in Yupik, and was selected for the baby walrus in a nationwide contest.
Pacific walruses under threat
The USFWS is currently considering listing the Pacific walrus as an endangered species. Global warming is melting the sea ice, forcing walruses onto land (where they cannot live), and oil development is planned in its most important foraging area.
The Pacific walrus’s best hope for survival is to receive the protections provided under the Endangered Species Act.
