An Idaho man was cited for shooting and killing a female wolf pup while standing behind his pickup truck on a public road.
According to local reports, Idaho Fish and Game wardens have cited a man for shooting a wolf in Idaho’s McCall-Weiser area, which is not an open hunting zone until October 1, 2009. He was also cited for hunting from a public road.
Authorities found out about the illegal shooting when the man called the 24-hour “wolf harvest hotline” to report the kill. The man thought he had killed the wolf pup in the Sawtooth zone, which opened to wolf hunting on September 1. However, after seeing a map, he realized he was in the McCall-Weiser zone.
Eyewitnesses reported that the man was standing in the road behind his pickup truck when he shot the wolf pup.
Officials seized the man’s rifle, camera, and hunting tag – along with the wolf pup’s skin and skull. The kill has reduced the quota of wolves that can be shot legally in the McCall-Weiser zone to 14.
Permits to shoot wolves are $11.75 for Idaho residents, and non-residents are charged $186 for the opportunity to kill a wolf. Or a pup.
The man’s name has not been released – yet.

What a terrible waste – the wolf cub would have grown up to have a higher IQ than the hick who murdered her.
This article is exactly why hunters should not be given permits to kill a wolf anywhere. It is obvious that the lawmakers including the federal government, Idaho, and the DNR did not make the rules for hunting this animal very clear. Ignorance is not being innocent in this act happening. The DNR is as responsible for this wolf cub being killed as the man who sat on a road believing he was the great hunter and taking a female wolf cubs life. I have never been so disappointed as I am this day and the decision of the Judge who would not stop this to protect the wolf until clarification of rules for hunting could be done. You all are as guilty as this man…….You all should be charged with the murder of this pup and pay the price dearly. There is a difference between Conservation and Control…..and how it should be done and not done…. Shakes head….I am ashamed of all of you who had a hand in this happening.
Thank God I do not live in that barbaric state! This lunatic hunter would have shot that pup no matter where he or she was. And then had the audacity to skin it? What a sad commentary for our times and especially for the few decent Idahoans. I can just hear this murderer telling all his pot-bellied hunting friends while all are guzzling their Budweisers, how he single handedly killed this horrendous predator. I hope his conscience (if he has one) keeps him awake for the rest of his miserable life!
Jim, I’m just hoping you don’t live in Wisconsin. I’m wondering if you own a pair of leather shoes or have you taken a trip to McDonalds lately…….stay the hell out of the meat department etc at the grocery store. It’s uniformed disnified people like you that are going to hurt the wolf in the long run. In today’s world more and more people are turning on this animal….because people like you did not let proper controls to keep this high maintenance non-endangered non-threatened killer from making more animosity towards it daily because you bone heads think it’s OK for it to live in habitat where they have a high chance to predate at unacceptable cost to the taxpayers and eventually the sportsman.
