‘Water For People’ Golf Classic Offers Sport and Balance with Nature

Sanctuary Golf Course at Sedalia, Colorado

Recognized as one of the US’s 100 best gold courses (Golf Digest), the ‘Sanctuary’ will once again host the 5th annual Water For People Golf Classic on August 19, 2009. Situated in Sedalia, Colorado, and adjacent to over 12, 000 acres of protected open space, the Sanctuary was carefully designed and “placed” within one of the most fragile and beautiful ecosystems in the State, if not the entire country.

TheĀ  private course offers stunning 180 degree vistas of Pike’s Peak (southward) and Long’s Peak (northward) and is home to some of the tallest pines in the State. To preserve its core beauty and “balance with Nature”, the Sanctuary permits only 9,000 rounds of golf annually, and the majority of these are for charity fund-raising tournaments.

While environmentalists are generally opposed to such “invasions” of ecosystems, and not overly enthusiastic about making use of open space for golf courses (many golf course are built over filled wetlands, or former wooded areas), some must give grudging respect to the Sanctuary’s owners and their dedication to keeping the area pristine, limiting human impact, and of course, the donations to environmental and other worthy causes. Golf courses do in fact give rise to ecosystems of their own (though limited due to less diversity of vegetation, usually). The Sanctuary can boast, perhaps, of having one of the most rich ecosystems of its kind.

What about the charity that is the namesake of this golf classic–Water For People ?

Water For People is a non-profit with a noble and global agenda: fresh, clean drinking water for all the world’s people. The charity seeks to “help developing nations develop sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities, and health and hygiene eduction programs.”

Worldwide, over 800 million people do not have access to clean drinking water, and an estimated 2.5 billion do not have proper sanitation facilities (note: proper sanitation for human waste removal does not necessitate having water, or large amounts thereof, for this purpose; there are alternative technologies, such as “solar cooking”, for waste removal/disposal/conversion). Everyday, and estimated 6, 000 people die from unclean ater-related diseases. Most of these victims are children.

The Corporate sponsor of the golf classic is the Coca-Cola Corporation.
