Recycling in Genesee County

Recycling in Genesee County isn’t something that’s widely advertised but it is available. I’m noticing more and more that people are getting into recycling their stuff.

Cell phones, plastic grocery bags, batteries, CFLs, ink cartridges…there’s a place to recycle just about anything and everything, you just have to know where to take your stuff.

We already talked about CBC Recycling, they accept your basics: cardboard, 1 & 2 plastics, glass, tin and aluminum cans, paper, and some e-waste.

Where can you take everything else?

Plastic shopping bags can be taken into Meijer, Kroger or Walmart stores and placed in their collection bins for recycling.

CFL light bulbs can be taken to your local Home Depot. The bins are usually located near the entrance. Home Depot also accepts power tool batteries for recycling.

Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples accept ink cartridges for recycling or refilling depending on the brand.

Cell phones, PDAs and cell phone batteries can be taken to ATT, Sprint, Verizon and Staples stores for recycling.

There are many places in the Flint area that accept automotive batteries: Allied Battery, Interstate Battery and Michigan Battery Equipment. There are also plenty of other places that accept all kinds of automotive parts, scrap metal, and tires for recycling. Check you phonebook under recycling or go to Earth911.org for a complete listing on where to recycle anything and everything.

Radio Shackaccepts rechargeable batteries for recycling while VG’s accepts any type of battery for recycling. Most stores require the batteries to be taken to the service desk.

If you have household furniture, appliances, or remodeling supplies consider donating them to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Proceeds from sales help build new habitat homes.

If you have clothing, toys, baby gear or anything else that still has life in it consider donating to Goodwill, Salvation Army or offering it to someone on Freecycle.

Just keep everything you can out of the landfill.
