Bald Eagles Rebounding in Michigan and Maine

Bald eagles in both Michigan and Maine have been removed from the endangered species list.

Patrick Rusz, director of wildlife programs for the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy stated ”I’ve probably seen more bald eagles in the last five years than I did the whole rest of my life. I think this is really good news. Delisting can sometimes be controversial, but I don’t see that being the case with bald eagles.”

Even after the delisting, bald eagles there will still be protected by the U.S. Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

In Maine there could be as many as 500 breeding pairs of the majestic birds now. In 1978 the state was down to 20 such pairs. Manmade chemicals released into the environment such as DDT caused many bald eagle deaths due to eggshell deformities.
