The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition just held its 17th annual Golden Wheel Awards and fundraiser in the swanky Green Room in the War Memorial Building in downtown San Francisco. The SFBC honored Sunday Streets for their ongoing work to make our public streets more accessible to fun and healthy activity for everyone.
SFBC Executive Director Leah Shahum inspires scores of bike activists and supporters.
Hundreds of people attended the gala this year to celebrate Sunday Streets and the Year of The Bicycle; the event raised $55,000 for the SFBC’s work to help promote the bicycle for everyday transportation. Bicycling has never been more popular, and the city’s Sunday street closures have been a huge success-creating a safe, fun, car-free place for people to get out and get active in San Francisco neighborhoods.
Burke Calls for More Bike Activism
John Burke, the CEO of Trek Bicycles, was the keynote speaker at the Golden Wheels, and he urged everyone to act today to make a difference. Mr. Burke stressed the incredible importance of each of our collective actions that we do every day to improve our bicycle infrastructure and our environment.
“Act today. Plant the tree now. Today the fight begins from here. Today we have to go out and ask people for their support because the bicycle is a very simple solution to very complicated problems.”
One of the most powerful things that each of us can do to help is to get involved locally and to ride a bicycle. On Friday March 15th in San Francisco City Hall the SFMTA will hear public comment on nine local bike lane projects (read more about these projects at: sfbike.org/56). And of course, Thursday May 14th is the best biking day of the year, Bike to Work Day! Please come join the hundreds of thousands of other riders and celebrate the beauty, simplicity and fun of the bicycle.
Thousands of San Franciscans got active and enjoyed themselves during Sunday Streets
