St. Louis Sewer District Sells Rain Barrels Through APRIL 3
The Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) in St. Louis, Mo., is selling rain barrels through 5 p.m. on April 3.
As of the end-of-business on Thursday more than 1,000 barrels had been ordered, according to the office personnel handling the orders. A news story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch laid out the general information this way:
The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District is offering its customers the opportunity to help take the burden off those creeks — and its storm water system — by purchasing 55-gallon rain barrels to collect and store rainwater that would otherwise flow into a storm drain.

The utility recently rolled out its inaugural rain barrel program and is taking orders until 5 p.m. Friday. To buy one, you must be a MSD customer and current on your account.
MSD is currently in the midst of a $2 billion, multidecade campaign to clean up local waterways by stopping sewage overflows. Overflows occur when moderate to heavy rainfall tax the system.
The program is offering the barrels for $45, and limits orders to four barrels per customer. To qualify, customers must be in good standing with their MSD accounts.
The barrels are, presumably, made of plastic. Personally, I’ve been looking forward to buying a barrel for some time, and know that, based on a little Internet searching, that $45 is a pretty decent price, especially when the spigots, etc. could otherwise add more to the cost. I would prefer an old whiskey barrel, but those often go for hundreds of dollars.
As a starter barrel, I appreciate running across this option. For anyone else who is interested, there is just one day left to place your order, by calling (866) 281-5737, or (314) 768-6260.

I saw this, too, Adam, but am intrigued by the DIY rain barrel plans Jeffrey put up over at Fun Times Guide to Living Green…
I think the rain barrels are a great idea. It’s a step in the right direction for St. Louis. I’m a St. Louisan and I hope we keep improving our affect on the environment.
The deadline for ordering rain barrels has passed. Thank you to everyone who made our inaugural program a success.
We are currently in the process of getting our rain barrel supply together and scheduling the pick up times and locations. Once this information has been finalized, MSD customers who purchased rain barrels will each receive a letter with the details. While there will be more than one pick up event scheduled in order to accommodate our customers’ busy schedules, but we ask that you please work with us in order to pick up your rain barrels during the schedule times.
Due to overwhelming interest in the rain barrel program, it may take several weeks before you receive your pickup letter. We ask that you please be patient.
If you have any questions about MSD rain barrel pick up, please contact the Division of Public Information at (314) 768-6238.
