CQ Press’s annual Crime State Rankings are in and Michigan is number 10 on their list of most dangerous states to live in. The 2008 report put Michigan in 10th place thanks to Detroit and Flint both ranking in the top ten most dangerous cities in America with Detroit ranking at number 3 and Flint ranking at number 6. Really? Flint number 6? I don’t know how they come up with these numbers. I live in Flint…OK not actually in Flint, my address is Flint but I live way out in the north end- definitely outside the city limits.
I suppose Flint has it’s issues but every night on the news when they are talking about all the bad stuff like someone getting shot, two people dead, shootings, gang violence, etc…it’s all about Saginaw- not Flint. I think Saginaw should be on the list. Sure crazy stuff happens here but nothing compared to Saginaw…I know because I am here and watching the news. I am not adding stuff up on a chart.
When you hear that a place is one of the worst crime ridden cities in America you expect to see violence on every corner like a war zone…like what you see in the movies when they show the crappy parts of California…or even New York. We really don’t have that here.
What Flint has is an economic crisis and a lot of empty buildings and houses. All Michigan gets is bad publicity thanks to the big three leaving us high and dry.
Michigan is a beautiful state full of natural beauty and places tourists would love…if we could quit getting such bad press. The bountiful natural areas are full of places for hunting, fishing, camping and just enjoying the great outdoors. Plus we have Frankenmuth and many other beautiful tourist spots. Genesee County, home to Flint, has plenty of beauty too. Someone just needs to invest more time in taking care of it instead of worrying about what GM will or won’t do.
I’ve heard that the crime rate is determined by the amount of crime that happens as it relates to the number of people that live here. When you look at it that way perhaps it is a lot but when you compare just the crime statistics (keep out population) to places like New York and LA we don’t even come close to being scary. We barely make a blip on the screen.

What state came in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 place?
I have to agree that Flint doesn’t compare to crime laden areas around the country. At least not in the scope of ranking 10th, cuz if that’s true….Crime has truly ceased to be a problem nationwide.
