Together Green, the folks behind Pennies for the Planet are at it again! They’ve issued a grant that’s allowing Trees Atlanta to work with local schools on plantings and education. The program kicked off on Thursday with a student-only tree planting at Brown Middle that’s focused on giving Atlanta’s West End neighborhood along the BeltLine bird-friendly, native trees and shrubs.

Just like eating habits, most folks’ environmental habits form during childhood. Not only are the kids at Brown Middle learning the value of things like planting trees and growing their own food, they’re forming habits that will hopefully last them into adulthood. It reminds me a little of the progressive Slovenian Eco-School plan.

The program funding comes from one of 41 new grants from Together Green to help communities “support creative projects that contribute to significant gains in habitat, water and energy conservation.” If the program at Brown goes well, the folks at Trees Atlanta are hoping to expand it to other local schools.
