For most of us in the Pacific Northwest, growing moss is probably easier than grass anyway. It's probably worth mentioning the obvious here, that moss isn't going to thrive in a lot of climates. I'm guessing that it prefers acidic soil as well, since it grows well here, though I seem to remember reading that it doesn't put down roots and thrives simply on moisture and air, so maybe the soil isn't all that important.
