Hong Kong Celeb Bound for Canada to Protest Seal Hunt

Hong Kong singer and actress, Karen MokHong Kong actress and singer Karen Mok will travel to Canada to speak out against seal hunting just before the start of this year’s seal hunting season, during which an estimated 300,000 will be killed for their fur and meat.

Mok will work with the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to make a mini documentary on seal hunting. The film and the publicity of Mok’s journey will be used to encourage Hong Kong to ban trade with Canada for seal products.

In an interview with Deutsche-Presse Agentur dpa, Mok explained:

Seals are such lovely creatures, and who needs seal fur, or any fur for that matter, when there is so many different fabrics we can use to keep us warm. There really is no point to fur.

“I see the trip as an adventure. I’m really looking forward to getting out there and shooting a documentary to let people know what is happening. Hopefully it will put an end to this torture.

“Hong Kong people are compassionate. There are a lot of animal lovers here, and I think they will react strongly. Seal products are banned in most parts of the world, but there is still a market in Asia, especially China and Japan, and Hong Kong can play a part in stopping this terrible torture of animals.”

Karen Mok is to be commended for taking a stand for her viewss, but it’s a little bit ironic that she would would travel all the way to Canada considering 90% of the seals are culled for the penises to satisfy the chinese medical market not for fur.

  2. AnimeEd says:

They need to kill 300,000 of them each year for a reason. Seals have become a pest and the only way to control them is to cull. The hunt creates a renewable industry as well as jobs for many people. The only reason this is targeted is because they are cute little baby seals. Not many people speak out against deer hunts and prairie dog hunts. Shame on Karen for being so shallow and native.

  3. Tron says:

Good for her! It’s not like things like shark fins, turtle soup or tiger penises are prevalent in Hong Kong diets.

    Her house – it’s glass.

Seals are a “pest”? What does that make degraded human communities who practice genocide, rape irreplaceable resources ignoring the future for their own chldren? The seals didn’t just magically appear on ice floes independent of any other species. They are part of a complicated ecological balance. You asked what would happen if you wipe out the seals in the name of some bogus “tradition”? For one, the huge populations of cod, haddock, whiting and plaice and their nurseries that Canada exterminated with its factory trawlers will never recover, because one of the ecological roles of arctic seals is to eat predators of those species, like skate and squid. In fact seals eat only 3% cod and other food fish. With less seals from the massacres and ice loss due to global warming the predators of those fish are rampant. Before europeans even showed up in Canada and exterminated the real Canadians, the Beothuk Indians, the population of seals was 40 million and the oceans were brimming of cod. With their greed and factory trawlers, Canadians exterminated those fish populations by 1992 along with the fish nurseries. A chain reaction from Canada’s criminal greed and stupidity along with ice loss due to global warming has already started that is completely upsetting the balance of the oceans. The fish species of the northern oceans belonged to the world, not Canada. Canada had no right to wipe them out. Canada has a record of driving species extinct on the East Coast, and this horrific massacre is a another criminal assault on the global environment. It is also treason against the Canadian people. Total revenue for 275,000 seal pups slaughtered in a savage and vicious fashion was a pitiful $6 million, one twentieth of 1% of the revenue of Newfoundland. That is not a primary income for anybody, it is only extra pocket money for a small gang of thugs. To achieve this Canada spends over $30 million in taxpayer money annually, buying up the carcasses which can’t be sold, Coast guard ships, overseas pr junkets for corrupt ministers, cost of bloated bureaucracies, etc. Canada lost over half a billion dollars in seafood trade from boycotts since 2004, much of that in Snow crab, the mainstay of Newfoundland. To add insult to injury many from this small mafia gang of sealers bilk the taxpayers for welfare checks the rest of the year, are plagued with alcohol and drugs, and do not work their main seasonal income, the various fisheries on the East Coast. The economy of Newfoundland grew by 9%, so there is no scarcity of jobs. The corruption in the Canadian government and in DFO is widespread. They have been shown to have repeatedly lied to the world, which is why the world does not credit the continuing deceptive and false PR issued by vote-seeking Canadian politicians about this scam “hunt”. There is nothing “humane” about these atrocities.. these are pups they are killing, 95% of which are between 2 weeks and 1 month old and which cannot eat solid food or swim. With half them still conscious when they are skinned the scenes of cruelty are unspeakable and reminiscent of scenes from Nazi Germany’s concentration camps. There is no excuse for this global crime. The commercial killing of seals must be stopped by worldwide boycotts and bans. And the Vancouver Olympics must be represented to the world and boycotted as an event soaked in blood from a renegade and barbaric nation.

First of all Mark, I would love to see your sources. You don’t elaborate on some strong claims. And I would like to tell you that reading you massive block of words was difficult to read, and not much worth it for the bullshit it contains. You say, “With their greed and factory trawlers, Canadians exterminated those fish populations by 1992 along with the fish nurseries.” I would just like to say to this statement that Newfoundland is often blamed for the loss of cod, but the truth is that there was a strict limit on how much cod could be fished by a Newfoundland fisherman, and it was Europeans who breached our boundaries and overfished. You also said, “They have been shown to have repeatedly lied to the world”. Um, what?
Another horribly untrue statement you made was that, “There is nothing “humane” about these atrocities.. these are pups they are killing, 95% of which are between 2 weeks and 1 month old and which cannot eat solid food or swim” I’m sorry to tell you that killing the whitecoats (cubs) is banned. Only the adults are killed. I assume the rumor that the whitecoats are killed was created because no one would care about the hunt if we weren’t killing cute fuzzy baby seals. Take the photo of Paul McCartney and Heather Mills and put them next to an adult seal? Surely it wouldn’t have gained such popularity. Most of you animal rights activists only care about the cute animals. On a sidenote about that particular incident, after Paul and Heather had left the scene, if the mother of that pup was still alive, it would have either disowned or killed it because of the foreign scent now on it.
The fact that you then compare the seal hunt to the concentration camps of Nazi Germany is disgusting and completely needless. You don’t explain yourself and the reason is quite possibly that it’s a ridiculous and untrue statement.
I’m sorry to have to let you know that you know nothing of truth about the seal hunt, and that you have no right to be giving this information to other impressionable “animal activists”.

So many people are against the seal hunt, and know little to nothing about it. They get their information from PETA or people like “Mark” and don’t seek the truth. The people of Newfoundland are subjected to so much hatred because of this money grubbing plot of PETA. It’s so frustrating to hear the animal lovers degrade Newfoundland and the seal hunt because of it’s “inhumane” and “needless murder of innocent animals”.
