Green Restaurants for Valentine’s Day in LA

Has Valentine’s Day always meant going out to eat? I suppose the tradition of the holiday (and those little candy hearts) is best left to another post, but since eating out seems to be de rigueur for couples these days, aim for making it as green as possible. A few joints in LA seem perfectly suited to the task.

Those that focus on organic, local food, like Akasha in Culver City, reduce the footprint of your special night out without reducing your enjoyment of the experience. Don’t think that local in LA means all avocados and fish tacos, either. Restaurants like Axe in Venice bring inspiration from around the world to their organic, seasonal dishes – Korean-style scallion pancakes anyone?

For a more casual night out, consider Hugo’s in West Hollywood or Studio City, Mama’s Hot Tamales in MacArthur Park, or Tender Greens in Culver City. If you’re the early-bird-gets-the-worm type, try A La Tarte in Pacific Palisades for a Valentine’s brunch. If you’re vegetarian, check out the Vegetarians in Paradise site for a handy listing of restaurants by neighborhood.

If you can’t find a suitable restaurant that specializes in local, organic food take a minute to consider what you order, wherever you end up. If there’s one choice that you can make to minimize your impact on the environment, steer clear of beef (sorry, I couldn’t resist!) Traditional corn-fed beef takes the cake when it comes to environmental impact, due to the huge amounts of water and fertilizers needed to raise cattle. If you’re going to go with seafood, make sure to take along your trusty Seafood Watch Guide to avoid selections that aren’t sustainably harvested or may be hazardous to your health. Then relax, and enjoy!
