Victory Garden Redux

Two activist groups are teaming up and petitioning Barack Obama to plant an organic victory garden on the White House lawn!

They’re calling the White House “America’s House” and asking the new administration to lead by example. They see a food garden on the White House lawn as a first step towards “a new National Victory Garden Program.”

Eat the View and The WHO Farm want us to take action and vote for their victory garden idea on Change.org. They give three compelling arguments for the initiative:

  1. Victory gardens have the potential to make us happier and healthier while providing more people with access to fresh produce. “Victory Gardens (behind homes, schools, in vacant urban lots, etc.) produced 40% of the nation’s produce at their peak, helped conserve food and natural resources at a time of crisis, resulted in the highest consumption rates of fruits and vegetables our nation has seen, and helped keep millions of Americans physically fit and active.”
  2. It sets an example. “First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt planted a Victory Garden on the White House lawn in 1943 over the objections of the USDA, inspiring millions by her example.”
  3. Victory gardens provide food for those in need. “The UN estimates that 1 billion people will go hungry in 2009 while climate scientists predict this year will be one the five warmest years on record. “

Check out their video The Garden of Eatin’, which gives a history of food gardens at the White House and how we moved away from that tradition. Who knew that the Presidency had such a rich legacy of self-sufficiency!

  1. I THINK THIS IS A GREAT IDEA!! People need to realize that they can do for themselves and not rely solely on commercial agriculture. Also this furthers the HEALTH MOVEMENT at its core principals!
