Proximity to Whyalla isn't really saying much. Whyalla has a population of 22,000 - with 3 surnames.

Apart from Fishing in water full of sharks and killer whales, where the only thing to break the wind between you and the south pole is the occasional penguin, trying to get out of whyalla and playing 'Outrun your drunken uncles' - there's not a lot to do in Whyalla and most of the population think 'Discovery' is a channel that comes on the fancy cable pack that they might get at christmas.

I'm just saying, it's not that surprising that nobody knew about this untill now.

Gary, thanks for the geography suggestion from (I'm presuming) an Australian point of view. I've updated the location reference. Also, for anyone interested in learning more about the area's precise whereabouts, you can find a <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=flinders+range,+Australia&sll=-18.223115,127.672398&sspn=0.008581,0.013518&ie=UTF8&ll=-32.694866,143.349609&spn=15.54458,27.685547&z=5" rel="nofollow">Google map of the area here</a>.

"Relative proximity to Melbourne", "Southeastern Australia"..?

The Flinders Ranges is in the state of South Australia and 300km from its capital, Adelaide.

Or perhaps it would be easier to calculate it's distance from Washington for the article.. (now i'm being a jerk ;))

Wow. Maybe this will make the US VP candidate Palin believe that hogwash that we actually evolved over time; not that we were put here 6,000 years ago, in a garden, fully formed. Ha! Evolution. 40 million years. Right. God put that reef there and you all know it. It was put there in one piece, just like you'd put a coffee table in your living room. God save the world if that woman gets her hands on any more power than she already has.

This is a fascinating discovery. You Aussies have so much going for you!

Cheers!
