The Hexayurt (see link) and Global Swadeshi are twin projects working on handling how to get people to self-sufficiency as quickly as possible. The hexayurt shelter goes up fast, can be mass produced very cheaply, and is free/open source - no copyright or patent. It ships with infrastructure to help people survive.

Global swadeshi builds on that base to discuss agriculture and how to get to a much higher standard of living, either after a disaster, or as a route out of poverty, all within the free/open culture.

There are solutions out there. The Hexayurt has been demonstrated at the Pentagon, won support from the Netherlands Red Cross, and within a year or two will be used in the real world in actual disasters. It takes a long time to get new humanitarian ideas adopted, but we are well on the way.

Please take a look at our site and see if you think it will help to get people back on their feet.
