A reasonably priced and effective volunteer abroad opportunity exists with Vive Peru, a nonprofit organization offering trips to Peru. We are dedicated to fostering cultural understanding and promoting sustainable development projects abroad in Peru in the areas of health, education, music, social work and engineering. It is also possible for students to engage in fundraising efforts to reduce the cost further. VivePeru works with locals to create projects that have lasting impact. http://www.viveperu.org

These two websites specialise in providing cheap/low cost volunteering opportunities. They are worth checking out if you want to volunteer abroad: www.volunteerlatinamerica.com and www.volunteer4africa.org

Re: Volunteer expenses.

This is a good point and one that I neglected to cover in the post. Certainly, there are many wonderful volunteer organizations and projects which wouldn't be able to function as they do without funding from volunteers. Thank you for the wonderful link. I admit that my mention of the Voluneer Abroad website in this post was far too short and cost-focused to do service to the wonderful resources it offers.

By the same token, for the most part, I've tried to list volunteering ideas here that are genuinely inexpensive by nature. For instance, for those already traveling or living abroad, I've tried to provide guidelines for using that time abroad in a constructive way. Also, certain organizations, like WOOF and Green Drinks function with very little or no charge from members/volunteers.

Volunteering on the Cheap

I think alot of people forget that there is a real cost associated with volunteering abroad. That cost should not be born by the those hosting the volunteers.

Let me explain.

You decide to volunteer say in Peru, before you even get there you have the travel expenses. When you get there you have local travel, accomodation, training, food and general associated day to day costs.

If you or your organization does not foot the bill, the $$$ impact of volunteering in most cases out weighs the benefit derived from the input.

Its hard to explain why you shuld pay to volunteer, I hope I have shed some light on this for those that follow.

Heres a more detailed explanation http://travel2help.org/jml/Why
