I’m always on the lookout for interesting new events that expand my knowledge, and introduce me to new people and ideas. Two such events are coming up over the next week in the Los Angeles area.
First up, this Sunday from 6pm – 8pm, a permaculture workshop will be held at All Shades of Green. For the uninitiated, like me, permaculture is generally defined as, “a system of perennial agriculture emphasizing the use of renewable natural resources and the enrichment of local ecosystems.” In layman’s terms, it refers to the design of agricultural systems that mimic natural systems.
The workshop will cover topics like building healthy soil, attracting wildlife, and landscape design. The facilitator, Melinda Joy Miller, founder of the Shambhalla Institute, is also a renowned feng shui master, so she brings those elements to bear as well.
And now for something completely different…the second event is sponsored by TiE, a network of entrepreneurs that works to inspire, foster and support entrepreneurship in Southern California. Called “Green Tech/Clean Tech”, the evening features private footage from Leonardo DiCaprio’s The 11th Hour. It also brings several panelists and speakers of interest, including:
- Dan Heinfeld, FAIA, LEED AP: President of LPA, Inc., one of the top sustainable architecture firms in the country. Notably, LPA designed the sustainable headquarters expansion for Toyota in Torrance.
- Jim Cahill: Regional Director of Solar City, the fastest growing solar installation company in the West.
- Rajeev Kapur: Founder and “Chief Wala” of Greenwala, Inc., a soon-to-be-launched social networking site devoted to connecting consumers with businesses to solve the crises of climate change and energy dependency.
The event is to be held at the Cerritos Sheridan on July 16th from 6pm – 9pm. To sign up, contact jay.proano@socal.tie.org.
