The West isn't the only ones who can help. The Far East also has quite a bit of technology in that field. But, I completely agree with what you said. Also, the poor management of the waste that is introduced to the clean water supplies sure does not help the matter any. If there were better control of all the waste that is released into the water supplies, I think that the water shortage could really be reversed. As I stated before, you all have very good ideas for retention and conservation of the current water supplies.

The answer probably lies in attempts to increase the accessibility of freshwater, by water desalination and other projects that many of these countries can't develop without help from the West

Surely the answer to this problem is three fold: firstly to increase aid focused on proper rain water retention and possibly purification of such reserves on a domestic level; secondly, to lobby governments to stop deforestation and thereby improve the health of rivers; thirdly, to build more substantial storm water facilities, particularly in countries prone to monsoon / heavy rainfall leading to floods, not only would this reduce flood damage, but provide additional water resources.

Yesterday I washed a knife off in running water. Not too long, but long enough for me to be stunned by the sheer waste of drinking water to wash one knife. I usually have a basin in the sink to catch waster water, but I didn't this time, just on automatic pilot. I thought 'what an affront to so many people who don't have easy access to drinking water.' May we all soon realize the preciousness of this resource.

Watre resources are indeed drying up in many places and poor people are the most affected. Our attitude towards water use needs to change drastically.
