Is Technology Harming Our Health?

The evolution of cell phones. (Image credit: Andynormancx at Wikimedia Commons, released into public domain.)Does man-made technology, whether in the form of mobile telephones or backyard pesticides, pose a threat to our health and well being? That’s the subject Doug Phillips plans to explore during a June 3 program at Ever’man Natural Foods in Pensacola, Florida.

Phillips, a naturopath and former dentist, will discuss the health effects of electromagnetic radiation from cell phones, computers, microwave ovens and other devices, as well as the hazards posed by rocket fuel, pesticides, herbicides, solvents and other chemicals in daily use.

One of my favorite shopping destinations in northwest Florida, Ever’man is a food co-op that offers not only a wide variety of groceries, deli sandwiches, bulk foods and organic beverages, but serves the community in many other ways as well. It’s a drop-off recycling site for Escambia County, a place to bring in old electronic devices and batteries for recycling, and a gathering area for people seeking health information, support programs or guidance on natural gardening, among other things.

Another plus: unlike some co-ops, Ever’man doesn’t restrict shopping to members only, and doesn’t require folks to work regular hours in return for membership benefits. So if you’re ever in the Pensacola area, be sure to stop by and check out the day’s specials. (I heartily recommend the fair-trade Danish pastry-flavored coffee, as well as the bulk pecans, which are bigger and crunchier than any you’ll find in a chain grocery store.)

Ever’man, located near downtown Pensacola at 315 W. Garden St., is open seven days a week (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday).

  1. WTF. Your first two paragraphs, delightful–made it sound like you were actually intelligent. But what happened? I’m reading this article expected you to give some background on the issue, not advertise the co-op! Who cares about what the hell Ever’man does? It’s clearly a divisible line there between paragraph 2 & 3… I had to take a step back there and go woh, what happened? What I take from this is you have basically no knowledge on the subject, finished your introduction, twaddled your thumbs thinking of what to put next, and then grabbed something out of the trash and scribbled it down.

Look, you asked the question ‘Is Technology Harming Our Health’. Instead of the article being about that, you wrote an advertisement. Furthermore, the question was never even attempted a solution like “Perhaps, we’ll just have to see.”

As a reader, I feel like I was tricked. That I was going to get some tasty information–and all I got was an advertisement.

    Disgusting.
