Leafy Greens in the City Scene
Providence, Rhode Island— The Ocean State might be the size of some counties in other parts of the country, but it’s big on going green. A local food co-op in Providence has been bringing fresh, local produce to its capital city dwellers for nigh on ten years now.
Urban greens is a food cooperative on Providence’s West Side with a mission to provide simple, direct access to affordable, local, natural products and to offer a community-based alternative to corporate supermarkets. The cooperative is guided by its values of equal access, local agriculture, local economy, co-operative principles, community partnerships and social entrepreneurship.
An even higher level of awesomeness dawns when you find out that it’s all held together by a volunteer-run buying club that currently provides a full range of groceries through biweekly orders. Currently, they process orders and display their wares online at www.urbangreens.com. Rumor has it that in the interest of making the cooperative buying model more accessible to the entire community they are working on opening a cooperative market to replace the online buying club and to give a storefront face to this community of online organic food geeks.

You know there ain’t nothin’ better than the locally produced food coming to you and your mouth, Most of us are used to eatin’ what makes it up from the south, but the difference is the colds, the sickness, the rush of nutrients that our bodies, which exist in a specific climate, can’t possibly absorb, and so its off from the top to the bottom, there ain’t nothin’ we can do once we make this kind of choice to consume.
But here we are and there it is. Some people, who finally got it right and are tryin’ to do it better all in the face of the most drastic, oppressive regime of our time, who are makin’ moves to build on the street just so those tryin’ to compete can see what there messin’ with, that’s what I see when I see storefronts for people next to those for profit.
It’s the age of the robot, can we coexist or bike through the parking lot?
