Hi, Forget about the regional airport options. Those of us who are local to British regional airports don't want them to expand either, with the resultant detriment to our environment. Since the majority of people who fly from the UK do so for leisure purposes, it seems questionable that we should allow ANY significant increase in aviation.

hello........for 27 years, I have been trying to get my business moving forward. I believe that concerns such as those you write about will finally make it possible.......to replace, supplant, airplane use with a new form of air transport: solar powered airships. eliminate the fuel costs, carbon footprints, need for runways. create an entirely new global, trillion dollar industry..building and operating lighter-than-air craft (NOT BLIMPS!)

pleased to elaborate at any time.

For years there had been a project to build a third big airport near Paris. It was very impopular. Public inquiries delayed the project year after year. Meanwhile, high-speed rail spread wider and wider. Every time a new line was opened the corresponding air shuttle went out of business. Finally, the third-airport project was dropped as it had become unnecessary. Maybe, if the British public uses the same delaying tactics as the French, the same thing could happen to Heathrow's 3d runway?

You make a good point, Mark. Many really, but when people fixate on one option, or fixate on being against an option, it's not the most productive place to be. Creating viable alternatives, or perhaps more simply creating broader awareness of existing alternatives (like the railway system) both for the local population, and for people traveling from abroad then continuing to short haul locations, would go a long way.
