Nordstrom Bags Go Green
Over the next few months, Seattle-based Nordstrom Inc. plans to phase out its non-recyclable shopping bags in favor of paper bags with recyclable cotton handles.
The switch is expected to take place between April and September, as the retailer runs out of supplies of its current propylene-handled shopping bags.
Nordstrom also plans to begin offering reusable shopping bags with a cityscape illustration designed by artist Ruben Toledo. The metallic, brushed-linen totes, which come with a small, attached rectangular case for storage, will retail for $21.95. The new bags became available March 15 in West Coast stores, and will eventually be sold at Nordstroms across the U.S. over the coming year.
As the next holiday season approaches, Nordstrom also plans to introduce fully recyclable gift boxes. Made of 100-percent recycled paper and 30-percent post-consumer content, the new boxes will be printed with a matte silver ink, rather than the current silver foil. The transition to the new boxes is expected to take place during October and November.
“We know our customers care about the environment and this is an effort to serve them better and reduce our impact,” said Erik Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom. “We will continue to look for ways we can be a better corporate citizen.”
