sanitation to people living in sahara areas is like talking about civilization in schools, universities, and mostly houses.. the begining should be from teaching children to use toilets,a matter of time things will change..and toilets will be usefull for the generation growing.dont expect to change anything now!

We need to begin with urban areas where there is no bush to act as toilet and where the denger of diseases are imenent. otherwise, Many sub Saharan cities and towns act as open big toilets. What a challenge?

Hi,
Have you looked up The Humanure Handbook ? It can be found at http://weblife.org//humanure/defult.html. The latest edition is for sale, but the earlier version is free to download

Matthew: Quite engaging insight that you share here; I am certain to review this story as a follow up on any responses or progress made on sanitation in Africa.

Interesting post, I think your last question is indicative of the problem. As I understand it, despite attempts at providing toilets, they often go unused.

I find this interesting,

"Of latrine owners who had built in 2004, 69% (53/77) had spent nothing on their latrine, those who paid spent an average of US$4.0"
[From: http://www.popline.org/docs/1697/304768.html]

Richard Branson recently gave $3billion "to fight global warming". The money will be invested in renewable technologies [that will no doubt help the Virgin brand further exapnd its empire]. And we gave him a pat on the back.

But according to Bjorn Lomborg (who many hate, but the man has at least looked at the numbers), that $3billion equates to delaying global warming by about a day, in 2100.

Branson's donation could instead provide $10 each for sanitation to 300 million Africans, today. I don't know how far that would stretch, and I appreciate it's not always as straightforward as I make out here, particularly the administration, but we do seem to have our priorities mixed up at the moment.
