Save a rain forest, send free condoms to the Americans, help to curb their appetite for all things harmful to the world! Better yet, try and appeal to the intelligentsia of this great nation to at least vote for Obama as a starting point on a long road to properly and equitably harvesting this great garden we have been granted – World Ecology! Quick, now before the Chinese overtake us! Wake Up America, Last Call!

Thanks for your comment. I want to address that feeling of “not being able to win.”

It’s true that soy has its drawbacks too. Still, the US is growing soy, too, which would be preferable for US consumers based both on Amazon protection and local eating.

Also, many companies that trade in Brazilian soy are aware of the problem and trying to fix it, as mentioned with the “moratorium on buying soy from newly deforested areas.”

It just comes down to another opportunity for everyday activism: calling the companies and encouraging them to do the right thing.

There’s hope yet.

Excellent post Gavin, very interesting. In some ways I feel that you can’t win, replacing meat with soy, using vegetable based inks etc only to find out the production of soy is not actually great for us either. Consumerism, even in an “eco-friendly” way has it’s pitfalls.
